Vermentino is one of the most representative white grape varieties of the Mediterranean coast, producing fresh, savoury wines with a distinctive personality. In Italy it is particularly associated with Sardinia, Liguria and Tuscany, where it develops different characteristics while retaining a recognisable varietal identity.
In this category you will find a selection of Vermentino wines from different producers and wine regions, ranging from young, fragrant and approachable expressions to more structured and complex wines capable of developing with age.
Citrus and floral aromas, Mediterranean herbs and a characteristic savoury quality make Vermentino a particularly versatile wine, ideally suited to seafood while also pairing successfully with many other dishes.
Vermentino generally produces wines characterised by good freshness, savoury character and a distinctive aromatic profile. Typical aromas can include citrus fruit, white-fleshed fruit, flowers, herbs and Mediterranean scrub, sometimes accompanied by mineral nuances.
On the palate it can be fresh and lively or broader and more structured, depending on terroir, grape ripeness and winemaking techniques. A pleasant savoury quality and a sometimes slightly almond-like finish are frequently associated with the grape.
Younger interpretations emphasise fragrance and immediate drinkability, while wines from particularly suitable vineyards or subjected to longer ageing can develop greater depth and complexity.
In Sardinia, Vermentino plays a major role and finds one of its best-known expressions in Gallura. Vermentino di Gallura DOCG comes from the northern part of the island and can produce wines with good structure, intensity and distinctive personality.
In Liguria, the grape is closely connected to coastal areas, where vineyards often characterised by steep slopes and proximity to the sea produce fresh, savoury wines particularly well suited to the local cuisine.
Tuscany, especially its coastal areas, is another important region for Vermentino. Different climatic conditions and soils allow producers to create styles ranging from fresh and approachable wines to richer and more structured expressions.
Vermentino is often fermented and aged in stainless steel to preserve freshness, varietal aromas and its characteristic savoury quality. This style particularly highlights the grape’s citrus, floral and herbal notes.
Some producers instead choose extended lees ageing or different fermentation and maturation vessels to create broader and more complex wines. The combination of terroir and cellar techniques therefore allows Vermentino to take on different profiles while retaining its distinctive identity.
Vermentino’s natural freshness and savoury character make it particularly well suited to seafood. It pairs beautifully with fish, shellfish, seafood, sushi, tartare, seafood pasta and vegetable dishes.
Fresher styles are also excellent as an aperitif, while more structured Vermentino wines can accompany richer fish dishes, risotto, white meats and fresh or medium-aged cheeses.
Our selection includes Vermentino wines from different producers, regions and vintages, with bottles chosen to showcase the various interpretations of one of the most distinctive white grape varieties of Mediterranean viticulture.
Our aim is to offer a choice suitable both for those looking for a fresh, savoury and versatile white wine and for enthusiasts interested in comparing the different expressions of Vermentino and its terroirs.
Vermentino is generally a fresh and savoury white wine, characterised by aromas of citrus fruit, fresh fruit, flowers and herbs. Its structure and intensity can vary considerably depending on terroir and winemaking style.
In Italy it is particularly widespread in Sardinia, Liguria and Tuscany. It is also grown in other Mediterranean wine regions, where it can take on different names and characteristics.
Vermentino is the grape variety, while Vermentino di Gallura DOCG is a specific appellation in northern Sardinia governed by its own production regulations.
Vermentino pairs particularly well with fish, shellfish, seafood, sushi, seafood pasta and vegetables. More structured expressions can also accompany white meats and cheeses.
