The history of Torraccia del Piantavigna dates back to the early 1950s, when Pierino Piantavigna planted a tiny vineyard on the hills of Ghemme, near Cavenago Castle. Alessandro Francoli, Pierino's grandson, founded the Torraccia del Piantavigna winery in 1997—Plantavigna after his grandfather and Torraccia referring to a nearly circular hill near the castle—developing a winery recognized both in Italy and abroad for its wines, respectful of tradition and terroir, yet modern.
The winery comprises 40 hectares at the foot of Monte Rosa and is dedicated to growing native grapes, as per the tradition of Ghemme and Gattinara, producing high-quality reds, whites, and rosés. To date, the Francoli family still owns the majority share of the company, but in 2015 the Ponti family (a leader in the production of vinegars and vegetables) acquired a significant stake.
