The winery was founded in 1989 by Piero Palmucci, a passionate wine enthusiast, in Castelnuovo dell'Abate, at the foot of Mount Amiata, on the southeast slope of the Montalcino hill. Today, the estate is managed by Claudio Tipa and Maria Iris Tipa Bertarelli.
Fattoria Poggio di Sotto boasts 48 hectares of privately owned land, 20 of which are dedicated to vineyards, 19 to olive groves, and the remainder to woodland. The vines, grown according to organic farming principles, are located on steep, south-facing hillsides, at an altitude between 200 and 400 meters above sea level. Sangiovese Grosso, the undisputed king of the Montalcino terroir, is the only grape variety grown on the estate, which benefits from the sea breezes from the Tyrrhenian Sea on one side and the protection of Mount Amiata on the other. Fermentation occurs spontaneously in 70-hectoliter truncated cone-shaped wooden vats, accompanied by long macerations on the skins and frequent pumping over. After malolactic fermentation, the wines age in large 30-hectoliter Slavonian oak barrels for varying periods depending on the wine.
